It was already 20 years ago that CHENG Pinggang held his solo exhibition of abstract ink paintings in Chinese Painting Institute of Shanghai. As 85 year old XingXing broke the stillness and woke up souls that revived Chinese art after the Cultural Revolution, enthusiastic CHENG devoted himself to this historical moment with his gifted works widely reputed.
The youth that devoted in painting is in his 50s now. It is a master’s exhibition that put CHENG into meditation again: which is my way of art? Abstract art in no way contradicts the skill of figurative painting. CHENG possesses solid painting skill that makes the background of the forming of his thought through the years. It embodies CHENG’s aesthetic thinking of art, both emotional and conquering. Looking at his paintings is like enjoying symphony in a music hall - rhythm is significant in his works. As a music lover, CHENG once dreamed to be a conductor to experience his life among notes and rhythms. However, he realizes that dream today in a different form - his abstract art.
Freed from various obstructions, CHENG now tends to be tranquil, which implies a mature thought and painting style. A sparkle bursts out of CHENG’s art life, like a highest note in a symphony that makes a sun in your breathing chest.
CHENG is always accompanied by nice music while driving, and he would also sing aloud sometimes. That is his true nature, and art just needs that true nature. Music and painting are endowments, like those natural wonders, enlightening art, and artists’ minds as well. That is just the harmony of mind and nature.
